About the Role
The Barnard College Design Center is seeking a part-time Graduate Assistant to support its service model, programming, and maintenance. This role is central to supporting general tool and equipment use, machine maintenance, assisting undergraduate student employees, and providing instruction and workshops.
Responsibilities
- Provide front-facing support for Design Center users during designated open hours, emphasizing safe and responsible tool-use.
- Monitor undergraduate staff members, especially during weekends and evenings.
- Assist with training new student employees on Center tools and equipment.
- Support student employees on-shift with troubleshooting and user questions.
- Ensure the Design Center remains clean and organized, including light cleaning tasks.
- Assist with unpacking and organizing material deliveries.
- Assist with inventory and identifying materials needing restocking.
- Perform basic equipment maintenance, such as unclogging 3D printers or rethreading sewing machines.
- Communicate significant machine maintenance needs to the Coordinator.
- Assist with workshops, including material preparation and co-teaching.
- Support Undergraduate Design Assistants in leading Safety Orientations and Getting Started Workshops.
- Contribute to an inclusive and welcoming makerspace shop culture.
- Assist with communications tasks, including social media posts and event flyering.
- Perform additional job responsibilities and duties as needed.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Enrollment in a Graduate Degree program.
- Competencies in one or more of the following: intermediate to advanced sewing skills, textile artistry, hand or machine embroidery, 3D printing, laser cutting, woodworking (with handheld tools or power tools), or experience programming arduinos/raspberry pis/wearable microcontrollers.
- Proficient with one or more of the following software: Adobe Illustrator (Photoshop and/or InDesign is a plus), AutoCAD or Rhino, Tinkercad, or similar software.
- Degree (or minor) in a design-adjacent subject area, such as architecture, urban planning, fashion design, engineering, or others (preferred).
- 1 to 3 years of related work experience, or a combination of education and related experience (preferred).
- Demonstrated experience providing technology or makerspace tool support to student, staff, or faculty communities (preferred).
