About the Role
The Facilities Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in advancing the museum’s mission by performing assigned duties and collaborating with the Building Operations and Safety department to ensure a safe and hazard-free environment in the new museum and executive offices.
Responsibilities
- Perform skilled repairs involving light electrical, carpentry, plumbing, sheet-rocking, plastering, and painting.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as fixing structural damages, replacing air filters, and greasing equipment bearings.
- Repair plumbing to prevent water damage and restore fixture functionality.
- Address potential safety hazards like worn flooring or faulty thresholds.
- Paint areas with faded or chipped paint.
- Replace light bulbs and perform simple lighting fixture and outlet repairs.
- Clean art collection, gallery spaces, storage areas, and office spaces.
- Perform routine trash removal and recycling.
- Assist in monthly/quarterly/semi-annual inspections of facility cleaning and maintenance equipment.
- Ensure cleaning and sanitizing of spaces complies with OSHA standards.
- Assist in coordinating routine cleaning projects using appropriate equipment and supplies.
- Oversee waste management and recycling in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
- Assist in coordinating and transporting office furniture and equipment.
- Assemble furniture according to manufacturer instructions.
- Operate standard floor-maintenance cleaning equipment.
- Inspect the maintenance and cleanliness of all museum areas and collaborate on correcting violations from city agencies.
- Manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions and work in teams on maintenance projects.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of museum staff and within the Building Operations and Security department.
- Exhibit initiative, flexibility, and teamwork.
- Work collaboratively to enhance the visitor experience.
- Read and understand oral and written instructions and communicate information effectively.
- Apply basic computer skills for email, correspondence, and research.
- Carry a company-owned cell phone during shifts.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls affecting the museum building and offices.
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the Studio Museum in Harlem.
- Follow all safety and prevention policies and procedures, including during emergencies.
- Perform seasonal snow removal as necessary.
- Assist in dropping routine mail to the local USPS postal office.
- Assist with performing moves using a U-Haul van/truck.
- Perform duties as a member of the Fire Brigade.
- Track, monitor, and replenish cleaning supplies and maintenance stock.
- Attend all assigned training and apply learned skills and OSHA compliance training.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Lives within walking distance of the Studio Museum in Harlem or in neighboring Harlem community.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a maintenance technician worker in a museum setting or class-A building.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English and in other languages.
- Possession of a NY State Driver’s License.
- Ability to operate scissor lift and Genie for replacing bulbs and fixtures.
- 30-hour OSHA Training.
- Sprinkler (12) and Standpipe (13) certificates issued by NYC-FDNY.
- Fire guard F-01 issued by NYC-FDNY.
- Ability to carry heavy office supplies, move office furniture, manage heavy trash, shovel and remove snow, broom sidewalks, storefront and roof areas.
- Able to bend, walk for extended periods, climb stairs, crawl inside mechanical room areas, use step ladders, and lift to 50-lbs.
