About the Role
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to define the technical direction and lead the evolution of our event streaming platform. This senior individual contributor role will act as a force multiplier, tackling complex architectural challenges, driving organizational technical strategy, and elevating engineering standards for those who build and operate streaming infrastructure. You will delve into the intricacies of modern streaming systems, making high-leverage decisions that will shape DoorDash's data streaming capabilities for years to come.
Responsibilities
- Set the multi-year technical vision and architecture for DoorDash's event streaming platform, and drive alignment across Storage, SRE, Data Platform, and Product Engineering.
- Lead large and ambiguous streaming initiatives from conception to completion, including re-architecting towards diskless, object-store-backed streaming to reduce costs and operational overhead.
- Gain deep understanding of Kafka and modern streaming systems (WarpStream, AutoMQ, etc.) to solve organizational-level problems.
- Own architectural decisions with company-wide impact, covering replication, consensus, storage design, multi-region topology, capacity, and cost efficiency.
- Debug and resolve complex distributed systems issues in production, addressing correctness, performance, and reliability under critical constraints.
- Improve technical standards through design reviews, mentorship of senior engineers, and by establishing best practices.
- Collaborate with engineering leadership to shape roadmaps, make build-versus-buy decisions, and translate business needs into platform strategy.
Requirements
- 8+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Proven track record of technical leadership across multiple teams or an organization.
- Experience operating event streaming systems like Kafka at scale, with an understanding of their internals (log storage engine, ISR replication, metadata consensus, consumer/producer protocol, partitioning, rebalancing).
- Strong engineering skills in Java, Go, or a similar language, with deep expertise in concurrency, distributed systems, and building reliable production infrastructure.
- Experience leading high-impact, cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problems to successful outcomes.
- Ability to influence technical direction across an organization without direct authority.
- Strong fundamentals in Linux, networking, storage, and JVM-based systems, applied to performance and failure mode analysis.
- Understanding of the trade-offs in object-store-backed streaming (latency vs. cost, network cost avoidance, compute/storage separation, metadata/caching design).
- Clear communication skills to guide engineers, managers, and leaders through complex technical decisions.
- Proficiency in using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) throughout the software development lifecycle.
