About the Role

Brex is seeking a Staff Engineer to identify and solve high-impact technical problems across the Travel & Expense domain. This leadership role, without direct reports, involves setting technical direction, raising design standards, and acting as a force multiplier for engineering teams. You will partner with existing Staff Engineers and EMs to shape the organization's technical strategy and investment priorities.

Responsibilities

Identify the highest-impact technical problems across Travel & Expense, including cross-team gaps, and drive them to resolution.
Set and raise the technical bar through design reviews, architecture decisions, and hands-on work.
Partner with Staff Engineers and Engineering Managers across expenses, travel, policy, and spend controls to align on direction and unblock execution.
Act as a force multiplier by mentoring senior engineers, improving team design and shipping processes, and growing future technical leaders.
Bring an AI-forward mindset to the organization's development, review, and operational practices.
Contribute directly to the group's technical strategy and inform leadership investment decisions.

Requirements

8+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of technical leadership across multiple teams or a group.
Demonstrated ability to identify and drive ambiguous, cross-cutting problems to resolution without a defined charter.
Deep experience designing and operating large-scale backend systems in production.
Strong collaboration skills and a track record of raising the bar for engineers.
Effective collaboration with both individual contributors and managers.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
