About the Role

Constructs and plans daily newscasts by organizing, writing, selecting, and making creative decisions for assigned live newscasts. Makes decisions about story inclusion, length, format, and order, and writes and rewrites stories as needed. Plans for contingencies and ensures all aspects of the newscast are complete before airing.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures all aspects of the newscast are complete before airing, including scripts, graphics, video lists, script times, and key information.
  • Enters story choices and information into the newsroom computer system.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of changes or special situations in a timely manner.
  • Writes and posts stories to the website and other media platforms, including social media.
  • Frequently updates online stories.
  • Edits videotape for broadcast as needed.
  • Communicates frequently and collaborates with newsroom staff, including reporters, anchors, photographers, assignment desk staff, creative services, and other producers.
  • Relays story and newscast instructions and information via telephone, email, or other available methods.
  • Assigns reporters and photographers as needed.
  • Motivates staff before and during newscasts.
  • Responds and works well in crisis and breaking news situations.
  • Handles last-minute and unexpected changes.
  • Communicates quickly and clearly to necessary staff and talent during breaking news.
  • Writes clear, accurate, and interesting stories.
  • Ensures visuals are relevant, appropriate, and impactful.
  • Breaks down complicated stories for easy understanding.
  • Makes immediate decisions about the timing of a live newscast during broadcast.
  • Communicates changes to the director, technical director, audio operator, graphics person, master control operator, and anchors during live broadcasts.
  • Completes post-show paperwork and tasks, including technical trouble reports and archiving.
  • Attends editorial and strategic meetings, coming prepared and interacting professionally.
  • Contributes story ideas on a daily basis.
  • Consults with news director and/or executive producer on difficult editorial issues.
  • Works established schedules and fills in for others or other positions as needed.
  • Completes other duties as assigned and needed.

Requirements

  • Some experience producing a local television newscast preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English well.
  • Able to work with others as part of a team.
  • Excellent organization and writing skills, including grammar and spelling.
  • Understands when to take charge of situations and exhibits leadership skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Must be able and willing to work all newsroom shifts, including overnights, weekends, early mornings, days, evenings, and holidays.

Education Level

  • Four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism or communications or equivalent experience.
