About the Role
Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) seeks a full-time Receptionist/Intake Paralegal to join our team. This position is available for immediate start.
Responsibilities
- Welcome prospective clients and visitors to the office and direct them to the appropriate case handler or external resource.
- Answer phones, respond to inquiries regarding services, direct calls, and take messages.
- Perform preliminary intake or screening interviews, including preparation of appropriate forms.
- Conduct screenings and intake via telephone, video, and in-person to determine client eligibility and ascertain problem type.
- Coordinate follow-up services, including appointments, referrals, client correspondence, and gathering documents.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of office priorities and intake procedures.
- Maintain familiarity with internal and external referral resources to ensure appropriate client referrals.
- Identify and make referrals for individuals who cannot be assisted by the office.
- Open and close client files, ensuring compliance with program protocols.
- Distribute basic client service information materials.
- Assist case handlers on client-related matters, including making phone calls, sending correspondence, and obtaining information.
- Enter and track information in electronic formats, run reports, and assist in preparation for audits.
- Maintain client-related files, including copying, scanning, uploading, and distributing documents.
- Interpret, translate, and utilize language assistance resources.
- Sort and distribute mail.
- Perform other tasks as assigned consistent with the collective bargaining agreement.
Requirements
- Experience working directly with the public.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a calm, helpful demeanor in a sometimes stressful and fast-paced environment.
- Ability to handle a busy reception desk and interact with a wide range of people.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent client interviewing skills.
- Demonstrated passion for social justice and a commitment to working with low-income communities.
- Strong written, communication, and organization skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new technologies.
- Spanish language fluency is required.

- $60,000—$83,706 USD
