About the Role

This newly created Senior Lawyer role supports the evolving needs of a transforming Legal, Ethics, and Compliance function. The position focuses on energy law and projects, requiring agility across other legal disciplines. It includes line management responsibilities, offering an opportunity for a legal professional ready for junior management.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on all aspects of energy law, including project development, regulatory compliance, commercial arrangements, and dispute resolution.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate energy project contracts (e.g., power purchase agreements, grid connection agreements, joint venture and partnership agreements, EPC and O&M contracts).
  • Support the business in managing energy sector risks, including regulatory, environmental, financial, and operational risks.
  • Advise on renewable energy projects, offshore and marine energy developments, and utility-scale infrastructure.
  • Provide legal input on development projects, including residential, commercial, and rural energy schemes, with a focus on delivery and risk management.
  • Provide legal advice across other areas of law as required, including commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, and governance.
  • Support enterprise-wide initiatives and transformation programmes with legal input and risk assessment.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders across business units, including energy development, marine operations, property, finance, sustainability, and operations.
  • Liaise with external counsel, developers, utility companies, consultants, and advisors as needed, ensuring value for money and alignment with internal priorities.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks in line with organisational appetite and policy.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of legal policies, templates, and guidance materials.
  • Line manage junior legal team members, providing coaching, feedback, and development opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture aligned with the department’s transformation goals.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to legal reporting and metrics.
  • Support continuous improvement in legal service delivery, including use of technology and process optimisation.
  • Respond flexibly to changing business needs, managing competing priorities with professionalism and resilience.
  • Demonstrate enterprise-wide thinking, offering support wherever the business need arises.

Requirements

  • Qualified solicitor in England & Wales.
  • Strong technical expertise in offshore wind/other renewable energy projects, regulatory compliance and permitting, and environmental and sustainability considerations.
  • Experience in private practice and in-house, preferably with an energy developer or utility company.
  • Experience or demonstrable interest in expanding into other legal areas (e.g., property/leasing, commercial, regulatory).
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Previous experience in mentoring or line management is desirable but not essential.
