About the Role
Wizcorp is seeking Game Engine Programmers for exciting projects on next-generation consoles. This role involves developing systems and utilities for custom proprietary engines, integrating rendering engines, and performing architectural changes. The ideal candidate will be able to design, test, and debug code independently, break down large features, understand complex systems, mentor engineers, and focus on optimization and performance.
Responsibilities
- Review code from other engineers to ensure quality.
- Develop systems and related utilities for custom proprietary engines.
- Integrate rendering engines into existing codebases.
- Perform architectural changes to accommodate new engine features.
- Work on save data management, job systems, memory management, and development support features.
- Design, test, and debug own code without assistance.
- Break down large features into engineering tasks and collaborate with others.
- Decipher and understand complex systems.
- Mentor engineers in engine development best practices.
- Develop systems with a strong focus on optimization and performance.
- Have an interest in working on different parts of a game engine (Rendering, Animation, Audio, etc.).
- Confidently communicate with all members of the company.
- Estimate own tasks and deliver them in a timely manner.
- Write clear, maintainable code that passes review by other senior engineers.
- Raise all blockers when they arise to the project lead.
- Test and document provided solutions for other developers.
- Implement and uphold software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle.
- Take ownership of large areas of the codebase and complex features.
- Take ownership of mission-critical areas of the codebase.
- Coordinate with members outside of the engineering team to deliver features.
- Determine large feature feasibility and propose solutions.
- Provide solid programming expertise for large features and architecture suggestions.
- Provide code review analysis to foresee problems with design and implementation.
Requirements
- Reside in Japan during employment.
- Have a few years of work experience with custom engines and released games on consoles.
- Proficiency in C++.
- Ability to deep-dive into engine architecture for improvements.
- Ability to write clean, readable, performant code and design architecture.
- Excellent debugging and optimization skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Knowledge of existing optimization techniques.
- Focus on performance and performance analysis.
- Strong math skills.
- Willingness to work as part of a team and contribute to technical discussions.
- Eager to provide and receive constructive feedback.
- Strong software development skills, design theory, and development processes.
- Strong personal time management.
- Experience in creation of Rendering engines.
- Experience in implementation of Animation specific tools.
- Experience in development targeting PlayStation platforms.
- Experience in development targeting Microsoft platforms.
- Familiarity with other target platforms (Nintendo, PC, mobile).
- University degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline; or relevant professional experience.
- For Japan-based candidates: 3+ years of professional software engineering experience and 2+ years of professional experience developing custom engine.
- For overseas-based candidates: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, and 5+ years of professional experience developing custom engine.
- Solid software engineering abilities (good code hygiene, familiarity with various coding patterns, etc.).
- Strong experience with C++.
- Proficiency in C# (WPF).
- Comfortable with source code management systems (Git, SVN, Perforce, etc.).
- At least conversational Japanese proficiency - JLPT N3 or above.
- English proficiency (ability to read, write, and discuss technical matters).
- Experience with Ruby, Python, shell scripting (Bash, PowerShell, etc.).
- Experience with other game engines such as Unreal, Unity, proprietary engines, or others.
- At least 3 years of experience in the video game industry.
- Worked on at least 1 released game.
