About the Role
The Senior Attorney will advise staff and conduct legal research, supporting two of the Foundation’s program areas. This role involves reviewing grant agreements, advising program staff on strategies, anticipating legal issues, and managing outside counsel to assess and mitigate risk.
Responsibilities
- Partner closely with program staff to act as counsel on grantmaking activities.
- Conduct legal research on rules applicable to the Foundation’s programmatic work on new and evolving issues.
- Work with outside counsel and grants management on the review of grantee documents to confirm tax status and compliance with applicable rules.
- Participate in program team meetings and convenings to understand relevant programmatic portfolios.
- Develop and implement practical policies and procedures.
- Provide support to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel.
- Collaborate with other departments.
Requirements
- Commitment to Freedom Together’s mission.
- Law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience.
- Experience in government, nonprofits, foundations, or a specialized legal practice.
- Admitted to practice in New York State.
- Understanding of nonprofit advocacy and emerging challenges in social justice movements and/or philanthropy.
- Experience adapting complex legal advice to create practical processes and guidance materials.
- Ability to understand Foundation goals and counsel staff on achieving them while considering legal risks and policies.
- Sound judgment and experience managing sensitive and confidential information.
