About the Role

Penguin Random House is seeking an experienced creative and operational leader to set the vision, standards, and execution of interior design across multiple publishing imprints. This role oversees a high-volume publishing program and directly manages a team of 11 designers, balancing leadership with an active design workload.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of designers and associate design directors, fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment.
• Allocate and balance workload across the team, ensuring efficiency and sustainable pacing.
• Review, guide, and approve design work, ensuring alignment with imprint identity and market positioning.
• Partner with publishers, editors, and authors to shape and execute creative vision.
• Serve as the primary design liaison to Editorial, Production, Production Editorial, Managing Editorial, and external partners.
• Collaborate and lead on workflow improvements, art processes, and production efficiencies.
• Manage freelance and external vendor relationships.
• Responsible for designing approximately 30 titles.

Requirements

• 10+ years as a book designer (or similar) with experience in managing imprints and high volume.
• Experience supervising and art directing design teams with 6+ staff.
• Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
• Solid understanding of typography, layout, and color theory.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Excellent knowledge of prepress and print reproduction.
