About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to serve as the senior technical authority for our family of cross-platform, cross-language SDKs. These SDKs are integral to nearly every 2K game, supporting Unreal, Unity, native C++, Go, and JavaScript. This individual contributor role involves owning technical decisions for the SDK portfolio, collaborating with engineering managers on strategy, and balancing coding with technical direction. A key focus will be driving architectural consistency across all SDK variants to ensure a unified developer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive technical decisions across the SDK portfolio in collaboration with the Director and team.
  • Defend the architectural direction for SDK design, layering, versioning, and evolution across various targets.
  • Ensure architectural consistency across language and engine variants for a predictable developer experience.
  • Write production code, prototype complex problems, lead challenging implementations, and actively participate in code reviews.
  • Collaborate effectively, build trust, influence technical decisions, and elevate team members through empathy and clear communication.
  • Define and uphold standards for API design, documentation, backward compatibility, performance, and reliability.
  • Utilize LLMs and AI-powered workflows daily for tasks such as prototyping, code generation, refactoring, and technical proposal drafting.
  • Build AI-assisted tooling to enhance the SDK team's impact, including code generation pipelines and automated review assistants.
  • Partner with engineering managers on technical strategy, hiring, and team growth without direct people management.
  • Engage with studio engineering leads to understand SDK usage in production and inform the roadmap.
  • Mentor engineers on the team to improve technical capabilities without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Represent the SDK team in cross-functional technical discussions across the Technology group and studios.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with substantial experience designing and shipping SDKs, libraries, tools, or platform APIs.
  • Fluency in C++ and at least one of C# (Unity), Go, or JavaScript / TypeScript, with the ability to quickly learn others.
  • Hands-on experience with Unreal and/or Unity, including integrating external native libraries.
  • Strong understanding of API design, versioning, deprecation, and backward compatibility.
  • Hands-on experience using LLM tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) for daily engineering workflows and productivity gains.
  • Comfortable making technical decisions, defending them with evidence, and adapting based on new information.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, including writing readable design docs, providing constructive code review feedback, and explaining technical trade-offs to non-engineers.
  • Proven ability to work effectively across teams without formal authority.
