About the Role
Own every dollar that moves through the company's rails, including card issuing, disbursements, reconciliation, and regulatory reporting. Work directly with co-founders and the existing Payments Engineer to build the technical backbone for the company's mission.
Responsibilities
- Design a money movement flow including ledgered internal state, transaction lifecycle management, idempotency, retries, and deterministic replay.
- Own card issuing and banking-rail integrations, working directly with partners like Lithic, Column, and LoanPro.
- Build high-trust, reliable reconciliation between internal ledger, card network events, banking events, and vendor/provider reports.
- Minimize operational risk by building guardrails to prevent bad states like double-spend or duplicate webhook processing.
- Own and evolve a multi-service monorepo spanning an event-driven pipeline, a payments API, balance healthchecks, and regulatory reporting jobs.
- Make architecture-level decisions on securely and reliably handling billions of dollars in state-funded educational payments, including fraud and credit risk controls.
Requirements
- Obsessive about correctness, understanding that small errors can lead to significant issues.
- Builds systems that remain predictable even when external factors like banks or APIs are unreliable.
- Craves ownership and wants to be the trusted individual responsible for money movement.
- Possesses a high-auditability mindset, willing to trace transactions through all system layers.
- Able to work in-person with the team in San Francisco, CA.
- Experience with Lithic, Column, LoanPro, Stripe Issuing, or comparable card and banking infrastructure is a strong plus.
