About the Role

As Product Counsel, you will be the day-to-day legal partner for product, engineering, and research teams, advising on new features, model launches, and creative tools from concept to completion. Mirage operates at the forefront of generative media, navigating complex legal areas such as likeness rights, copyright, training data, privacy, and platform policy. You will also assist in triaging the company's broader legal needs across commercial, corporate, and employment, working with founders and the Chief of Staff, and managing these workflows with outside counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as embedded counsel for product and engineering, reviewing features, flows, and launches at the pace of ship.
  • Advise on complex issues in generative AI and synthetic media, including right of publicity, IP and copyright, content moderation, and provenance and disclosure.
  • Own consumer-facing legal surfaces such as Terms of Service, privacy policy, in-product disclosures and consents, and app store compliance.
  • Counsel marketing and growth teams on claims, endorsements, and promotions.
  • Build lightweight legal processes, including launch reviews and escalation paths, to enable speed.
  • Triage incoming legal matters across the company and manage them with relevant stakeholders, including outside counsel when necessary.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of legal experience, including substantial product counsel work at a consumer technology company (in-house, or firm plus in-house).
  • J.D. and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar with the ability to practice in-house in New York.
  • Fluency in the legal landscape of consumer software, including privacy (GDPR, CCPA, COPPA), IP, UGC and content issues, and consumer protection.
  • Practical, business-first judgment with the ability to provide clear, concise answers and workable paths forward.
  • Comfortable operating as the sole lawyer, with a curiosity to explore new areas.
  • Experience with generative AI, synthetic media, or similar technologies is a plus.
  • Experience managing outside counsel relationships and legal spend is a plus.
  • Experience as an early legal hire at a startup, or a desire for such experience, is a plus.
