About the Role

This position performs advanced natural gas distribution design work supporting customer-driven and system-driven projects. A Designer B develops complete engineering design packages and provides technical guidance to junior design personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review engineering designs for natural gas distribution facilities in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and Company practices.
  • Prepare complete design packages including distribution main and service designs, meter sets, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) designs, plan and profile drawings, construction details, and associated documentation.
  • Perform field investigations, engineering calculations, material selection, and constructability reviews to support safe and cost-effective designs.
  • Prepare and coordinate permit applications, bills of material, specifications, and construction documentation required for project execution.
  • Support customer-driven projects, including new business, public works, and third-party development activities requiring Gas Engineering involvement.
  • Coordinate with customers, contractors, municipalities, regulatory agencies, operations, and construction personnel throughout project development and execution.
  • Conduct field inspections and design verification activities as required.
  • Provide technical guidance, design review, and CAD training and mentorship to Drafting Technicians and junior designers to support the development of design and drafting competency.

Requirements

  • AAS Degree in applicable Engineering Technology.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy.
  • Satisfactory completion of validated aptitude testing, as determined by the Company.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer-aided design (CAD) software to prepare engineering drawings, plan and profile drawings, and construction documentation.
  • Five to six years of progressively responsible experience in utility drafting, engineering design, or related technical design work, including experience independently developing engineering designs and construction documentation.
  • Experience preparing natural gas distribution design packages and construction documentation.
  • Knowledge of natural gas distribution systems, meter set design, HDD design, permitting requirements, and plan and profile development.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and provide technical leadership, training, and mentorship to junior design personnel.
  • Must have the ability to work without a need for current or future visa sponsorship.
