About the Role
You will lead mechanical engineering efforts and be the owner of the physical machine for our first product, a ruggedized, containerized system designed to survive harsh environments and protect critical components. This founding role involves setting the mechanical engineering direction, building the first article, and leading the future mechanical team.
Responsibilities
- Own structural, thermal, and packaging design of our first product from design through first article, qualification, and field deployment.
- Design for real-world conditions including ISO container standards, transport loads, IP-rated ingress protection, corrosion resistance, and MIL-STD-810-class qualification.
- Architect thermal management for large battery systems and power electronics in unconditioned coastal and desert climates.
- Design mechanical interfaces and mechanisms for system operation with unmanned vehicles.
- Establish the company's mechanical foundation, including CAD/PDM, drawing standards, BOM discipline, and DFM processes.
- Manage fabrication vendors for weldments, enclosures, and machining, and be present during builds.
- Participate in hardware deployment and commissioning at field sites.
- Recruit and lead future mechanical engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of experience designing structures for hardware deployed in harsh environments (aerospace, maritime, energy, automotive, defense).
- Proven experience as a responsible engineer, owning a product from concept through fabrication, testing, and field deployment.
- Deep expertise in structures or thermal management, with working knowledge across mechanisms, materials, and manufacturing.
- Hands-on fabrication experience, understanding costs, distortion, and vendor capabilities.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (NX, SolidWorks, or Creo).
- Ability to perform analysis grounded in hand calculations first, followed by FEA.
- Comfortable making high-consequence decisions rapidly without extensive documentation or review boards.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual.
- Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
