About the Role

This two-year fixed-term position assists the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) with documentation and consultation to comply with CalNAGPRA and the federal NAGPRA. The role supports the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (AOA) department and the Arts of the Americas department.

Responsibilities

• Complete object records for FAMSF collections subject to CalNAGPRA and NAGPRA, including object name, artist information, place of creation, provenance, tribal affiliation, exhibition and publication history, materials and technique.
• Compile research files including data sheets, archival and library research findings, transcribed interviews, oral histories, Federal Register research, and consultation notes.
• Complete reporting required by law on program websites and databases, including the CA Native American Heritage Commission Tribal Resource Collections Database and the NAGPRA database.
• Assist with publishing notices in the Federal Register.
• Participate in collections inventory, reconcile inventory records, and perform physical inventory tasks.
• Maintain standardized records of communications with tribes and NAGPRA officials.
• Coordinate with curators on NAGPRA-related record keeping.
• Help organize and participate in NAGPRA consultation meetings, both in-person and virtual.
• Prepare information for Tribal delegations/participants and FAMSF staff for consultations.
• Assist with logistics and hosting for consultation meetings.
• Assist with record keeping related to consultations and repatriation events.
• Coordinate with Registration, Technical Services, and the Executive Office.
• Assist curators with archival and community-based research to determine cultural affiliation for items.
• Participate in meetings with curators, registrars, and the City Attorney.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Native American Studies, Visual Studies, Art History, Museum Studies or related field preferred.
• Specialized knowledge of Native American art and visual culture required.
• At least two years of NAGPRA experience, curatorial experience, or similar (including curatorial fellowships) ideally in an art museum or cultural heritage setting.
