About the Role

The Director of Social Services is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive social services for clients referred by the NYC DHS-Division of Family Services. This role aims to stabilize homeless families by enhancing their independent living skills and facilitating their placement into permanent housing. The position is based at the Lighthouse location in Long Island City, NY, and involves contributing to the management team's achievement of program goals.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure social services staff possess working knowledge of all DHS procedures, New York State Part 900 Regulations, OTDA, CRF Rules and Regulations, and relevant laws for providing social services and permanent housing.
  • Ensure timely collection, preparation, and analysis of client and program information for reporting, program evaluation, and planning.
  • Oversee and supervise the Social Services department staff on the utilization of the DHS Client Assistance and Re-housing System (CARES) for various functions including intake, service plans, and housing placement targets.
  • Maintain a safe living environment by ensuring staff conduct unit inspections and document maintenance needs.
  • Intervene or direct staff intervention to effectively resolve problems.
  • Collaborate with Housing Specialists to achieve weekly, monthly, and quarterly targets.
  • Maintain knowledge of DHS Housing programs, packages, and incentives.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop independent skills workshops.
  • Coordinate an inter-agency network of providers to ensure families receive appropriate medical, nutritional, educational, and mental health assistance.
  • Collaborate with Executive Directors to develop and implement social service policies and procedures, including relocation goals.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as required, including serving on-call.
  • Evaluate and verify employee work assignments and ensure timely performance evaluations.
  • Facilitate communication within an interdisciplinary context and contribute to staff meetings and policy development.
  • Participate in training and staff-development activities.
  • Serve as a Super User in the DHS CARES System to assist program staff with troubleshooting.
  • Ensure staff attend CORE trainings within six months of employment, including mandated reporter training, CARES, Incident Reporting, Safe Sleep, Mental Health First Aide, and Domestic Violence training.
  • Be on call 7 days a week for Priority one incidents.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work is preferred; a bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Five years of social services experience, including clinical interventions with families and disadvantaged populations, group work, substance abuse issues, and housing programs.
  • For Master's degree holders: at least two years of supervisory and administrative experience.
  • For Bachelor's degree holders: at least four years of supervisory and administrative experience.
  • Experience with securing client entitlements through knowledge of housing regulations and homeless programs is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal relations skills with the ability to establish cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule.
