About the Role
Kepler is building the infrastructure layer that wraps around AI models to make their outputs reliable, traceable, and verifiable. This role will own the models inside Kepler's AI research platform, focusing on model selection, fine-tuning, and the systems that support them. You will work at the intersection of AI and finance, impacting critical business decisions for financial professionals.
Responsibilities
- Own the models inside Kepler's AI research platform, including model selection, fine-tuning, evaluation, and extraction systems.
- Ensure model choice is a permanent engineering problem to be solved.
- Fine-tune models for specific tasks and evaluate their performance against frontier models.
- Build and integrate evaluation harnesses to score agent research runs.
- Redesign model routing across workflows to optimize for reasoning, extraction, and verification.
- Identify and resolve issues in workflows to improve success rates.
- Take ownership of entire functional areas, potentially extending the platform to new industries or leading new architecture as infrastructure scales.
- Own systems end-to-end in a small team environment.
- Collaborate closely with a close-knit team in New York.
- Utilize AI tools heavily in the development process.
- Work within a fast-paced startup environment with a high engineering bar.
- Handle unglamorous problems, including regressions, bugs, and last-minute debugging.
- Roll up sleeves and handle tasks as part of a team.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building production software.
- Shipped ML systems to production (fine-tuning, agents, retrieval, structured extraction).
- Understand what breaks between a demo and a product.
- Treat evaluations as engineering, building measurements before features.
- Strong general engineering fundamentals.
- Experience in other languages is acceptable if strong engineering fundamentals exist.
- Quick learner, comfortable in unfamiliar codebases.
- Care about the end-user's experience with shipped products.
- Proactive in fixing issues rather than filing tickets.
- Provide constructive feedback on designs before PR submission.
- Communicate proactively about potential issues.
- Respond promptly when teammates need assistance.
- Adapt to changing plans and still deliver work.
- Prioritize problem-solving ability, systems thinking, and drive to build transformative agentic infrastructure.
