About the Role
Ethical Culture Fieldston School is seeking passionate high school educators committed to progressive education and ethical practices. The History Teacher will teach 9th grade Modern World History and electives, with a focus on non-Western regions, contributing to the academic success and inclusive education of all students.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with colleagues, sharing resources and communicating about curriculum and students.
- Communicate student performance and growth with parents/guardians at scheduled conferences.
- Address student behavioral issues and challenges to maintain a safe and calm classroom environment.
- Maintain accurate student record keeping, including grades and attendance.
- Encourage students' social and emotional growth.
- Ensure confidentiality of student information.
- Attend departmental, divisional, and school-wide meetings.
- Maintain compliance with school policies, state regulations, and educational standards.
- Perform other related projects and duties as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in history or a connected discipline (e.g., social studies education, political science, Pan-African studies, international relations, women's studies, ethnic studies).
- Master’s degree in Social Studies education or a related field of history is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching history or a connected discipline.
- Prior experience working with students in grades 9-12 is preferred.
- Passion for teaching with a positive demeanor towards all forms of teaching and learning.
- Ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and the community.
- Ability to maintain accurate student record-keeping of grades and attendance.
- Commitment to cultural competency and fostering an inclusive environment for students of all backgrounds.
- Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage time effectively, stay organized, and prioritize tasks.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and proficiency in new technologies (e.g., Google Workspace tools).
- Ability to cultivate a welcoming culture where all community members feel valued and appreciated.
