About the Role
The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) seeks a Staff Attorney for its LSV-H program to provide legal advocacy to veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, helping them overcome legal barriers to stable housing.
Responsibilities
- Represent veterans in housing matters, including eviction defense, landlord disputes, and disability accommodations.
- Advocate in consumer protection cases, such as debt collection, predatory lending, and bankruptcy.
- Handle family law matters, including custody, support, and divorce.
- Pursue military justice solutions, such as discharge upgrades and record corrections.
- Assist with VA benefits and public benefits, including disability, healthcare, GI Bill, Social Security, and SNAP.
- Support veterans experiencing domestic or intimate partner violence.
- Collaborate with VA medical centers, Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), and community partners.
- Maintain federal grant compliance.
- Participate in community outreach and legal education initiatives.
Requirements
- JD from an accredited law school.
- NYS Bar admission or eligibility.
- 2-3 years of legal experience, preferably in civil litigation, veterans law, or public benefits.
- Strong advocacy, research, and case management skills.
- Commitment to serving veterans and understanding military culture.
- Willingness to travel regionally and work occasional evenings/weekends.
- Submit cover letter, resume, law school transcript, three references, and a 5-10-page writing sample.
