About the Role

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is seeking a Domestic Relations Staff Attorney to provide legal services across sixteen counties in Upstate New York. This role is crucial for addressing systemic inequities and ensuring access to justice for low-income clients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal assistance to eligible clients in Family and Supreme Courts within Clinton, Essex, and Franklin Counties concerning Domestic Relations Law.
  • Collaborate with government and nonprofit agencies that offer supportive services to litigants in Family and Supreme Courts.
  • Offer legal assistance in domestic relations proceedings, including custody, visitation, abuse/neglect, child/spousal support, matrimonial, and family offense matters.
  • Deliver a full spectrum of legal services, encompassing counsel and advice, referrals, representation in administrative hearings, affirmative and defensive litigation, systemic advocacy, community legal education, outreach, engagement, and community lawyering.
  • Ensure compliance with requirements and collaborate with other LASNNY domestic relations attorneys and paralegals to maximize access to services and address systemic issues arising from Family and Supreme Court proceedings.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of LASNNY's race equity priority and professional development plans.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to practice in NYS or eligible for admission.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality legal services to low-income clients and addressing systemic inequities.
  • Ability to identify and address systemic legal problems and collaborate with staff to ensure comprehensive legal services.
  • Must be intelligent, hardworking, careful, reliable, possess good judgment, and have attention to detail.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, staff, and educators, and work independently and efficiently.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Reliable transportation; occasional travel may be required.
  • Strong preference for lived experience.
  • Prior experience with community lawyering or community organizing is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in Chinese or Spanish is preferred.
  • Demonstrated creativity and experience in using varied legal tools and strategies to secure systemic outcomes for low-income clients is preferred.
