About the Role
The Dean of Academics & Instruction is responsible for the instructional coaching of teachers and for the academic outcomes for students. This role supports the culture and climate of a high school grade level and aids in students’ social and emotional learning and development.
Responsibilities
- Provide instructional support and coaching to teachers to ensure each student reaches their academic potential.
- Support academic operations related to curriculum, assessments, and instructional guidelines.
- Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, overseeing academic operations and teacher development systems.
- Observe instructional delivery and provide feedback to enhance teacher content area development, including unit and lesson design.
- Analyze data to modify curriculum and assessments to meet student needs.
- Collaborate with academic staff to support the sharing of best practices.
- Work with school personnel to advise principals and teachers on instructional strategies and intervention programs for struggling students.
- Collaborate with the Teaching and Learning Team on school-wide assessments and make instructional decisions based on student performance.
- Cultivate a standards-based, data and results-oriented culture.
- Observe teachers and provide specific strategies for improved instructional delivery.
- Work with teachers and school leadership teams to create and improve aligned curriculum resources.
- Collaborate with teachers in determining appropriate resources and support.
- Support teachers by providing feedback on lessons and assessments aligned with school college-readiness standards.
- Serve as an expert in national trends and best practices in curriculum development and instructional strategy for historically underachieving students.
- Act as a teacher coach, providing expert advice on improving lessons and units through ongoing analysis.
- Review lesson plans, unit plans, and assessments.
- Understand scope and sequence models.
- Observe classroom instruction and offer comprehensive analysis and feedback.
- Provide instructional strategy best practice training.
- Develop and facilitate professional development.
- Support curriculum development using the backward design model and advise on scope and sequence based on essential content knowledge and standards.
- Develop, execute, and oversee aspects of instructional guidelines, including adherence to assessment calendars, data entry, and data analysis/action planning.
- Make recommendations on best practices for curriculum alignment across all grade levels within the specified content area.
- Ensure high expectations for scholars are maintained in each classroom and by all teachers.
- Work with teachers to ensure consistent communication with parents regarding instructional gaps and improvements for students.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
- Minimum of 2+ years as a Lead Teacher with a proven record of results.
- Minimum 1+ years preferred coaching teachers in both academics and Culture & Climate.
- Proficiency in managing a team, coaching teachers, and/or designing curriculum, preferably in the charter, private, or public school environment.
- Experience developing academic policies, systems, and school-wide analysis and data collection preferred.
- Prior experience working in urban schools and communities preferred.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
- Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
- Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, use fingers to type, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance; stoop/bend and reach, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear.
- Dexterity to write and operate standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.
