About the Role

This role leads the enterprise side of the Academy’s new Research Translation and Enterprise function, aiming to turn scientific discovery into companies and products that reach patients. You will build and run the commercial focused activity, helping to unlock investment for scaling science, developing the enterprise offer, and exploring equity models for venture creation.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead the enterprise function, ensuring alignment with strategic direction, effective planning, governance, and resourcing.
• Manage, develop, and motivate a growing team, setting objectives, providing coaching, and fostering high performance.
• Deploy people, budgets, and expertise effectively, managing risks and escalating significant issues to the Director.
• Originate, design, and secure support for new Enterprise fellowship schemes.
• Collaborate with internal teams to ensure effective delivery and handover of initiatives.
• Work with venture and industry partners to identify promising science and shape commercial propositions.
• Support scientists in assembling the necessary expertise for translational propositions.
• Develop options for an equity model for the Academy's involvement in science-based businesses.
• Protect the Academy’s independence by maintaining control over processes and separating commercial work from charitable activities.
• Build and manage partnerships with external funders and capability providers.
• Negotiate terms with partners to secure commitments and shared ownership while protecting the Academy’s independence and charitable purpose.
• Provide clear reporting and assurance on funding, delivery, performance, and risk to the Director.

Requirements

• Substantial senior management experience and deep expertise in the commercial side of UK life sciences.
• Recognised as a credible practitioner in the UK research, science, or commercial environment.
• Proven track record of delivering complex, multi-partner work.
• Credibility with venture, investment, and industry partners, built on direct experience in life sciences translation, investment, or commercial collaboration.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Judgement to weigh opportunities and trade-offs.
• Ability to grow commercial work without compromising the Academy’s independence.
• Strong record of building partnerships, influencing senior people, and negotiating effectively.
• Ability to secure commitments, funding, and shared ownership across organizations with differing incentives.
• Confident and inclusive leadership style with experience managing and developing teams.
• Experience setting priorities, utilizing resources effectively, and building a high-performance culture.
