About the Role
Lawyers Alliance is seeking fellowship candidates to provide legal services to nonprofit organizations and social enterprises. Fellows will gain exposure to transactional legal work and practical skills, assisting clients with various business law and governance issues. This role offers a full-time staff attorney position for one to two years, focusing on serving low-income and disadvantaged New Yorkers.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal assistance to nonprofits and social enterprises serving low-income and disadvantaged New Yorkers.
- Navigate business law and issues, including nonprofit governance, structuring, contracts, real estate, tax, regulatory concerns, and legal transactions.
- Work on legal representation projects.
- Teach workshops and webinars on nonprofit legal issues.
- Assist with client outreach and screenings.
- Conduct legal research.
- Support pro bono clinics and volunteer attorneys.
- Contribute to legal alerts, publications, and resource calls.
Requirements
- Applying for third-party funding through Equal Justice Works and other funders.
- May 2027 JD graduate, recent graduate, or experienced attorney seeking to transition to public interest work.
- Experience working with low-income clients and/or nonprofit organizations on transactional legal issues is preferred.
