About the Role

The Museum of Modern Art seeks a Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Architecture and Design to support contemporary architecture exhibitions, collection displays, and acquisitions. This role provides essential preparatory and logistical support to ensure smooth execution of exhibitions, collection care, programs, and daily department operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior curatorial staff with administrative tasks, including minute-taking, presentation preparation, drafting communications, and scheduling meetings.
  • Support research and preparation for exhibitions, collection rotations, publications, acquisitions, online content, collections records, and departmental meetings.
  • Assist with exhibition and collection rotation preparation, including scholarly research and writing.
  • Coordinate loan arrangements, catalog preparation, and exhibition checklist creation.
  • Oversee and schedule preparation work for interpretive materials, conservation, photography, matting, framing, construction, and lighting.
  • Prepare and install wall labels, publication texts, and manage image rights.
  • Communicate with architects and collaborators to support the display of their work.
  • Conduct daily inspections of artworks in galleries and exhibitions, arranging follow-up actions as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and scholars regarding collection works.
  • Answer gallery tour inquiries.
  • Collaborate with curatorial interns and other staff.
  • Stay informed about current artistic and exhibition activities in architecture through visits, publications, and studio visits, sharing insights with senior staff.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in architectural history, architecture, or a comparable field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Relevant work experience and competence within the department's area of interest.
  • Expertise and deep knowledge of contemporary architecture on local, national, and global scales.
  • Keen interest in the history of architectural display at MoMA and curiosity to develop new display models.
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm to work collaboratively within a curatorial team.
  • Openness to feedback and a desire for learning and mentorship.
  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills across multiple departments and audiences.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Working knowledge of standard office technology, procedures, and equipment.
  • Reading knowledge and verbal fluency in one language in addition to English.
  • Required on-site presence four days per week, with potential for five days per week as determined by management.
