About the Role

The Manager of Purchasing leads the daily operations and performance of the Purchasing Department within an organic produce distribution company. This role manages a team of Buyers, ensures accurate inventory and competitive pricing, and fosters strong relationships with growers and vendors to support company sales and margin objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and support a team of Produce Buyers in daily purchasing activities.
  • Establish clear direction, expectations, and accountability within the department.
  • Conduct regular coaching, one-to-one meetings, and performance reviews.
  • Oversee daily purchasing of organic produce to meet customer demand.
  • Monitor inventory movement, shrink, and aging products to optimize profitability.
  • Partner with Sales and Operations to anticipate demand shifts and supply challenges.
  • Serve as the primary Purchasing representative across internal departments.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with growers, shippers, and vendors.
  • Negotiate effectively while maintaining long-term supplier partnerships.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Purchasing to establish goals and execute strategy.
  • Monitor Buyer performance metrics and operational KPIs.
  • Work onsite daily to engage with the team and product.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of purchasing or produce procurement experience preferred.
  • Prior leadership or management experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of organic produce, seasonality, and supply chains.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment.
  • Ability to work variable hours, days, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently and over 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Comfortable working in environments with temperatures ranging from 34 to 80+ degrees.
  • Ability to work in coolers for extended periods.
