About the Role
Freelands Foundation seeks an HR Manager to lead its people strategy, supporting ambitious growth including a major capital project and program expansion. This role is ideal for an HR generalist aiming to implement best practices at strategic, policy, and process levels, championing art education.
Responsibilities
- Deliver and oversee people management practices and policies covering the entire employee journey.
- Ensure HR practices align with Freelands Foundation’s values and strategic objectives.
- Ensure HR processes are fit for purpose and comply with employment regulations.
- Oversee recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes, providing guidance and support.
- Create or update recruitment and onboarding process designs as needed.
- Oversee accurate and timely employee record-keeping, ensuring accessibility and understanding of roles.
- Oversee performance management processes, including training plans, appraisals, and improvement plans.
- Support line managers in delivering performance management processes and monitor agreed timetables.
- Oversee consideration and responses to requests for reasonable adjustments, flexible working, and changes to terms of employment.
- Liaise with finance colleagues to support payroll processing, benefits reporting, and record-keeping.
- Support the Director of Finance and Operations on disciplinary or grievance processes.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to HR processes on an ongoing basis.
- Ensure colleagues are fully trained and confident in their HR responsibilities.
- Review and update the Foundation’s HR tools and systems.
- Ensure the employee handbook and HR policies are fit for purpose and compliant with UK regulations.
- Anticipate future policy changes based on employment law and best practice, drafting recommended updates.
- Communicate and update staff on how and when to refer to and apply HR policies.
- Train colleagues in following HR policies.
- Support the Director of Finance and Operations in applying and future-proofing the HR strategy.
- Maintain knowledge of best practices in HR strategy in comparable organizations and make recommendations.
- Support the strategy for increasing diversity and develop approaches to ensure inclusion.
- Develop the Foundation employer brand and benefits to position it as an employer of choice.
- Undertake tasks necessary to deliver the role's responsibilities.
- Cooperate with colleagues, providing support and cover as needed.
- Undertake organizational training as required.
- Work within the organization’s agreed policies and processes.
- Uphold the organization’s values and mission in all interactions.
Requirements
- Substantial experience supporting employees and senior managers in people management processes within a small to medium-sized organization.
- Substantial experience developing well-researched and evidence-based recommendations around HR policy and practice.
- Experience delivering effective recruitment, selection, onboarding, and performance management processes.
- Some experience proposing and embedding a training plan across a small to medium-sized organization.
- Substantial experience working within a generalist HR function.
- Some experience using online tools for recruitment and HR record-keeping.
- Detailed up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law legislation, including upcoming changes.
- Practical knowledge of policies, procedures, and processes for an effective HR function in a small to medium-sized employer.
- Practical understanding of the roles of HR, senior management, line managers, and employees in enacting compliant HR processes.
- Up-to-date knowledge of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion approaches and developments.
- Up-to-date knowledge of DBS and related safeguarding processes.
- Formal generalist HR training, minimum CIPD Level 3 qualification (e.g., Foundation Certificate in People Practice) or equivalent.
- A proactive and collegiate approach to problem-solving.
- A positive response to deadline-driven project working.
- Strong support for the mission to champion art education.
- A strong belief in the intrinsic value of art.
- Basic understanding of art making within the context of art education (desirable).
- Broad knowledge of UK charity compliance requirements (desirable).
- Experience with recent and predicted developments in performance management processes and practice (desirable).
- Experience using online tools for project management (e.g., Asana or similar) (desirable).
- Successful delivery of change management strategies and organizational restructuring (desirable).
- Experience supporting and delivering effective HR practices within a charity, ideally arts and/or education-led (desirable).
- Experience designing and delivering internal leadership or people management development programs (desirable).

Salary/Compensations
- £43,891 per annum FTE
