About the Role

The Knowledge & Innovation (K&I) team at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett drives the Firm’s strategic use of knowledge management, legal technology, digital products, AI, and innovation to enhance efficiency, client service, and practice development. This role leads the development and implementation of research and competitive intelligence products and services, overseeing information platforms and collection management to support legal talent globally.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Research & Insights strategic plan and roadmap.
  • Create team goals and priorities aligned with client needs.
  • Provide operational oversight and direction for the function.
  • Ensure the department is efficient and provides high-value service.
  • Control expenditures and manage the Research & Intelligence budget.
  • Manage a team of researchers and intelligence analysts.
  • Manage the evaluation and selection of information resources and APIs.
  • Collaborate with practice groups and senior leaders to identify emerging trends.
  • Advance and maintain relationships with other Firm departments and stakeholders.
  • Design and implement education and awareness programs for department tools and services.
  • Negotiate contracts, SOWs, and service agreements.
  • Monitor contract terms and license agreements for compliance.
  • Leverage metrics to measure adoption of tools and services.
  • Maintain strategic relationships with Research providers.
  • Identify and execute areas where AI can amplify Research impact.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the legal industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a people leader.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to translate complex developments into actionable insights.
  • Experienced in developing strategy to implement or enhance systems, procedures, and workflow.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct change management initiatives in an Information Services environment.
  • Operational background to effectively direct, organize, staff, budget, and evaluate library operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of commercially available legal research, competitive intelligence, and other legal industry resources.
  • Expertise in legal research tools and technologies (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law) and digital knowledge platforms.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys and other professionals in a cross-functional environment.
  • Prior experience negotiating contracts and managing vendor relationships.
  • Experience preparing and managing a multi-million-dollar budget.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Superior organization skills with the capability to assess needs, assign priorities, set goals, develop strategies, manage change, evaluate outcomes, and make recommendations.
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to resolve issues effectively and confidentially.
  • Cross-functional leader who can partner effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced client services environment.
  • Critical thinker who can demonstrate initiative and independent judgment.
  • Ability to make administrative decisions, interpret policies, supervise, and counsel staff.
  • Understanding of AI with hands-on experience in Prompt Engineering.
