About the Role

The Grassroots Manager plans and executes a comprehensive grassroots advocacy program, attracting and developing volunteers, and implementing strategies for legislative priorities. The role focuses on building volunteer capacity and supporting fundraising efforts, while embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

• Develops and implements local and state grassroots strategies and advocacy campaigns.
• Supports federal campaigns and congressional champion building.
• Organizes volunteers to complete federal activities.
• Communicates strategically using tailored messages for specific political environments.
• Writes and disseminates e-mails, legislative alerts, and issue talking points.
• Plans and manages Cancer Action lobby days or similar events.
• Maintains ACS CAN web pages, Facebook pages, and social media accounts.
• Identifies and develops volunteers with personal stories.
• Serves as the staff manager of the volunteer structure in the assigned geography.
• Implements Direct-Action Organizing principles for state legislative campaigns.
• Coordinates campaign activities with grassroots/patient coalition partners and ACS CAN teams.
• Represents ACS CAN and its mission accurately.
• Establishes and maintains strategic collaborations and partnerships.
• Ensures electoral activity adheres to all legal and reporting requirements.
• Attracts, trains, and develops volunteers.
• Strengthens grassroots capacity through the volunteer structure.
• Facilitates local, state, and federal grassroots advocacy by volunteers.
• Maintains direct local relationships with elected officials and their staff.
• Supports cross-functional collaboration with American Cancer Society staff, coalitions, and partners.
• Conducts training for volunteers and ACS staff.
• Inputs and maintains ACS CAN volunteer information in databases.
• Drives volunteer fundraising in assigned states.
• Encourages volunteer-led fundraising to engage and grow the volunteer base.
• Participates in ACS CAN fundraising activities.
• Supports policy forums or other fundraising events.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree.
• Minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
• Political issues or campaign organizing experience strongly preferred.
• Experience attracting, developing, and engaging volunteers preferred.
• Fundraising experience is a plus.
• Experience using Salesforce, Every Action, or similar tools is a plus.
• Experience or familiarity with fundamentals of Direct Action Organizing is a plus.
• Ability to travel up to 20%, including overnight and occasional weekend travel.
• Ability to travel by car, train, or plane as needed.
