About the Role

Relay is seeking a Director of Communications to lead external and internal communications. This is a foundational role for the company, building a dedicated communications function from an existing base of momentum, including an active PR agency relationship, a brand campaign, and a growing media presence. The ideal candidate is a strategic communications leader experienced in high-growth environments, capable of maximizing impact with limited resources and possessing a strong understanding of how to build brand trust in a competitive market. This role reports to the VP of Marketing and collaborates with Brand, PMM, and the executive team to align public messaging with internal beliefs and ensure resonance with target audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Own Relay’s earned media presence end-to-end, including media strategy, press coverage, executive thought leadership, and reactive communications.
  • Translate the brand narrative into compelling stories for reporters, editors, and key audiences.
  • Lead the PR agency relationship, defining the strategic agenda, ensuring accountability for coverage outcomes, and aligning the partnership with internal priorities.
  • Develop and manage a proactive media program, expanding relationships with reporters in fintech, SMB, and entrepreneurship.
  • Pitch stories proactively and integrate Relay into relevant industry conversations.
  • Manage executive communications for the CEO and leadership team, including speechwriting, op-eds, LinkedIn presence, and media preparation.
  • Coach executives to enhance their public presence as credible voices in the industry.
  • Drive communications for product launches, brand campaigns, and company milestones in collaboration with PMM and Brand.
  • Develop integrated announcement plans that prioritize earned coverage.
  • Monitor and protect brand reputation, implementing a crisis communications playbook and responding swiftly to emerging issues.
  • Measure key performance indicators such as share of voice, earned media quality, executive visibility, message pull-through, and internal communications reach.
  • Utilize data to refine communication strategies.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in communications, PR, or corporate affairs roles.
  • Meaningful experience at a high-growth SaaS, fintech, or consumer brand.
  • Experience owning a media program, including building reporter relationships and driving coverage wins.
  • Strong executive communications skills, including writing for CEOs and shaping founder public presence.
  • Ability to coach individuals to improve their media presence.
  • Skilled writer with a high editorial standard, capable of clear communication for small business owners.
  • Experience in a regulated or compliance-adjacent environment, adept at navigating legal reviews.
  • Strategic operator skilled in building systems and processes.
  • Ability to establish and run a communications function from scratch.
  • Comfort operating independently as the sole owner of the communications function.
  • Low ego and high conviction in strategy.
  • Experience working with brands serving small business owners or self-employed professionals (Bonus Points).
  • Public point of view on communications, media, or brand (e.g., newsletter, talks, active LinkedIn presence) (Bonus Points).
  • Experience navigating major brand moments under pressure (e.g., funding rounds, product controversies, defining campaigns) (Bonus Points).
  • Successful background check and employment verification.
