About the Role

This is a senior individual contributor role at the Principal level, responsible for setting technical direction and influencing data engineering strategy across complex, regulated, national-scale clinical and research platforms. You will shape the design, build, and operation of scalable, secure data systems while maintaining a hands-on approach to engineering and leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction and influence data engineering standards across platforms, pipelines, and data products.
  • Lead the design and delivery of complex, large-scale data solutions in cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Influence architectural direction for enterprise data platforms, including Lakehouse, distributed, and event-driven systems.
  • Act as a technical authority across squads to ensure alignment with data engineering standards and architectural principles.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, bioinformaticians, and product teams to guide technical decision-making.
  • Ensure all data engineering approaches meet strict governance, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive the adoption of modern engineering practices including DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automation, and observability.
  • Improve platform resilience, performance, and operational maturity.
  • Evaluate and influence the adoption of new tools and technologies.
  • Mentor experienced data engineers and influence capability uplift across the organization.
  • Contribute to organization-wide technical communities, standards, and design governance.

Requirements

  • Proven experience operating at a senior or Principal level in data engineering.
  • Strong track record of designing and delivering enterprise-scale data platforms and systems.
  • Deep experience with modern data architecture, cloud infrastructure, and scalable data processing systems.
  • Strong hands-on programming experience in Python and SQL.
  • Strong expertise in data modeling, data lifecycle management, metadata, and governance.
  • Experience working in complex regulated environments such as healthcare, genomics, or research.
  • Strong understanding of security by design and handling highly sensitive data.
  • Proven ability to influence architectural and data engineering direction across multiple teams or domains.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with experience influencing senior technical and non-technical stakeholders in matrix environments.
  • Must pass a Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
