About the Role

As Director of Engineering (m/f/d), you will own the technical strategy and operating model of our data platform and the data engineering organization. This role is crucial as AI has become infrastructure for our research, and we need an individual to define how the platform and organization scale as a long-term strategic asset. You will report directly to the Managing Partner & Chief AI Officer and lead and grow a team of 3 senior data engineers in a player-coach capacity, balancing hands-on work with leadership.

Responsibilities

Scale the petabyte data platform and own its full lifecycle, including lakehouse, orchestration, and processing for alternative data.
Lead as a player-coach, splitting time between hands-on work and managing senior data engineers.
Set standards, review designs and code, hire new team members, and support engineer development.
Architect AI-native engineering standards for all engineering functions, including coding, code review, testing, and security.
Bridge strategy and engineering by working with leadership and the investment team to translate requirements into applications.
Make infrastructure and architecture choices for reliable RAG and agentic orchestration at scale.

Requirements

10+ years of software engineering experience.
3-5 years leading data platform teams, including shaping org structure, hiring, and review processes.
Several years owning data platforms end-to-end (ingestion, ETLs, delivery, quality) at data-centric companies operating at terabyte scale.
Deep Python and SQL expertise with clean engineering and testing practices.
Experience with distributed data processing, production APIs, and a major public cloud (AWS preferred).
AI integrated into building, reviewing, and testing processes.
Experience driving AI adoption beyond personal productivity, building team-level playbooks and standards for tools like Claude Code and Codex.
Outstanding academic achievements in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Natural Sciences.
Exceptional impact in past roles.
Fluent English communication.
