About the Role

This senior leadership role sets the agenda, establishes a framework, and directs the activities of the Operations function. The key objective is to identify and realize agreed savings by automating, standardizing, and offshoring delivery processes. The role ensures onshore service delivery is integrated with offshore capabilities, standardizes operational processes for global consistency, and provides a cost-efficient service delivery proposition to drive customer advocacy and lower operating costs.

Responsibilities

  • Active and engaged member of the GCOO senior leadership team, providing leadership and driving the people agenda.
  • Drive a risk-aware culture, ensuring proactive identification and mitigation of operational and third-party risks.
  • Support the Japan COO in managing the risk and control environment within Global Operations.
  • Develop strong advisory controls relationships with senior executives and business leaders.
  • Engage with industry bodies to shape and influence policies and regulations impacting Global Operations.
  • Take ownership for Operations teams, focusing on customers, risk mitigation, and investment returns.
  • Deputize for the Japan COO in various operational matters and forums.
  • Drive a continuous quality improvement and service excellence culture across all delivery processes.
  • Collaborate with CIB businesses to ensure strategic priorities are delivered.
  • Leverage best practices across different group entities to enhance service and improve efficiency.
  • Represent HSBC at external industry-wide forums.
  • Drive offshoring of appropriate activity to achieve maximum benefits realization.
  • Drive adoption and use of central Utilities.
  • Adopt the operating model for Japan Operations, influencing stakeholders to deliver a globally consistent, technology-driven, cost-effective Operations proposition.
  • Create and propagate best-in-class delivery processes, reducing exception and manual processes.
  • Ensure Performance/Service Level Agreements are agreed and achieved or exceeded.
  • Effective management of contracts with third-party suppliers and vendors.
  • Implement and manage billing across Customer Groups, showing year-over-year reductions.
  • Articulate and champion ongoing improvement of customer journeys related to Operations provision.
  • Drive the skill development of Line Managers in Operations.
  • Liaise with People Teams to develop training programs for staff in Operations.
  • Make independent recommendations to facilitate a successful job rotation plan in Operations.
  • Ensure the successful implementation of programs to motivate staff and enhance productivity.
  • Roll out the Group Production Management vision/concept efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensure appropriate contingency is provided for all processes within the area of responsibility.
  • Ensure effective business recovery plans exist and are regularly tested.
  • Lead and support initiatives to minimize operational loss provisions.
  • Maintain HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and regulatory issues.

Requirements

  • The job holder ensures that departments under Operations work within the parameters laid down in HSBC Policies & Procedure Manuals, Central Bank Rules & Regulations and in compliance with any other local Laws and Regulations.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with applicable regulations and with Group systems and procedures, and banking operations.
  • Requires an ability to think laterally to improve processing efficiency.
  • Expected to provide senior executives with well-researched and clear recommendations to improve customer service, control, and cost effectiveness.
  • Must work closely with CIB Heads in the market and all Relationship Managers to achieve common objectives.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Principal challenge is to deliver the highest quality of service to support CIB customers without compromising the Bank’s focus on internal controls and costs.
  • Adapting procedures to take full advantage of a changing environment is critical.
  • Expected to launch new initiatives to deliver exceptional service.
  • Needs to be innovative and forward-looking.

  • Cultivate a positive controls culture across the Japan GCOO leadership team and across the franchise.
  • Assess and build the right skills and capabilities to manage the dynamic operations landscape.
  • Understand and translate strategy into executable actions across Japan Operations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and management skills with experience in establishing and managing a wide range of projects.
  • Proven ability in developing and managing high-performing teams with a clear vision.
  • The jobholder will continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and business area.
