About the Role
The Community Organizer coordinates and implements SRO Collaborative Programs and provides housing counseling to tenants. This role supports the Community Organizing Team in achieving civic engagement objectives and provides housing counseling through community education and outreach.
Responsibilities
- Support tenant empowerment and advocacy through housing counseling, education, and outreach.
- Build collective power and encourage participation in tenant organizing efforts.
- Participate in internal and external partnership-building to engage and expand the tenant base.
- Perform intake and provide housing counseling to low-income, primarily monolingual Chinese-speaking tenants.
- Assess housing problems, provide advice, education, support, translation services, and referrals.
- Provide housing counseling guidance to the SRO team and assist with outreach efforts.
- Collaborate with the Department of Building Inspection to ensure code-compliant residential buildings.
- Conduct community education on tenant rights, fire prevention, and emergency preparedness.
- Develop outreach materials and translations regarding rent ordinances, eviction proceedings, and housing legislation.
- Provide pre- and post-application assistance for affordable housing programs like DAHLIA and SFHA.
- Maintain tenant case information in Salesforce and generate reports for data analysis.
- Identify and develop leadership among SRO tenants through grassroots training.
- Support organizing strategies by empowering tenant leaders to participate in community planning.
- Encourage participation in civic activities, meetings, and hearings through representation and translation.
- Participate in cross-team collaboration to represent community perspectives on land use, transportation, and housing development.
- Embody organizational values of respect, compassion, empowerment, and teamwork.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in social services, sociology, psychology, or a related field.
- Bilingual and biliterate in Chinese and English, with Cantonese fluency required.
- Proficiency in basic word processing, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills.
- Strong creative and comprehensive problem-solving skills.
- Sensitivity to the needs of low-income, immigrant, monolingual, homeless, and SRO communities.
- Knowledge of the needs of low-income residents in Chinatown and San Francisco.
- Commitment to a comprehensive vision of community development.
