About the Role

The Autonomous Freight Systems team is building Flexport's client-facing rates platform and self-serve freight booking experience from the ground up. This role involves owning significant technical domains end-to-end, driving the engineering of systems for rate visibility, pricing intelligence, and AI-assisted booking. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build the platform that transitions Flexport to a tech-run model for a large client base.

Responsibilities

  • Take end-to-end technical ownership of core systems, from schema design and backend APIs to React surfaces, and drive them to production without oversight.
  • Proactively identify and lead the resolution of gaps, inefficiencies, and engineering problems within your domain.
  • Design and build AI-powered features and integrations, including agent workflows and LLM-backed automation in production.
  • Drive technical design for significant features, producing well-reasoned proposals and aligning teammates.
  • Mentor and support engineers through code review, pairing, and design feedback.
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, pricing, and operations to translate complex domain problems into production-ready solutions.
  • Build and ship incrementally, deploying to production dozens of times per day.
  • Ensure reliability and quality by building in metrics, monitoring, and applying learnings from incidents.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a proven track record of shipping production-grade systems with increasing independence.
  • Deep ownership instinct and accountability for outcomes.
  • Full-stack fluency, capable of owning a feature from database to browser.
  • Hands-on experience building software that integrates LLMs into real user workflows, understanding practical challenges like latency, reliability, prompt fragility, and cost.
  • Agency and drive to identify and solve problems proactively.
  • Technical rigor with a passion for simple, well-tested, well-structured code.
  • Strong communication skills, able to explain technical tradeoffs clearly.
  • Proficiency with deploying, monitoring, and maintaining production services on cloud infrastructure (AWS).
