About the Role
The Privacy and Product Counsel handles a wide variety of legal matters for Bonterra, with a focus on privacy, data protection, and AI compliance. This position will report to the General Counsel. You will join a creative, collaborative, solutions-oriented team. We are looking for a proactive attorney who can design effective and scalable processes while employing an empathetic interpersonal style that can build bridges across stakeholders. This is a new role on the team, so the ideal candidate will be comfortable establishing this function both on the team and in the company.
Responsibilities
- Designing, improving, and implementing global privacy and data protection compliance programs and processes, and educating teams about relevant laws.
- Developing and overseeing AI governance and compliance programs, including policies, risk assessments, and controls for AI and machine learning systems.
- Drafting and maintaining privacy and data protection policies, notices, and documentation, and managing related terms in contractual arrangements.
- Working closely with product, engineering, information security, and IT teams to support security initiatives, frameworks, and requirements.
- Monitoring and advising on regulatory and industry developments, including trends in copyright, privacy, security, and AI laws.
- Partnering with product and engineering teams to provide guidance on legal issues related to product design, development, and operations, with attention to copyright, privacy, data protection, and responsible AI use.
- Creating and developing legal processes and documentation to support new product or business initiatives.
- Providing pragmatic and strategic advice to minimize legal risks while advancing business goals.
- Partnering with key stakeholders across the organization to build strong relationships.
- Identifying opportunities to centralize knowledge and create scalable processes to increase visibility and expedite communication and execution.
Requirements
- J.D. (or LL.M. plus foreign law degree) and a member of a U.S. state Bar in good standing.
- 5+ years of related legal experience, with a focus on privacy and product counseling, advising software companies specifically.
- Strong knowledge of privacy and data protection laws (including CCPA, CPRA and GDPR).
- Experience advising on AI governance, including privacy implications of AI systems, automated decision-making, and emerging AI regulations.
- Team player with strong business acumen and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to break down complex legal concepts into easy-to-understand and practical advice.
- Ability to tackle projects large and small with a collaborative, low-ego approach.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
- Enthusiasm for AI-powered tools and a willingness to champion AI.
- Ability to bring diverse perspectives from different industries, backgrounds, and cultures.
