About the Role

Responsibilities

• Perform Immediate Response and children's services functions under a generic model.
• Gather information and conduct investigations and assessments of the immediate safety of children.
• Intervene in crisis situations, which may include moving children at risk to a place of safety as mandated by the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.
• Develop relationships with children and families to assess strengths and needs.
• Participate in consultations, Talking Circle/OTC, and case conferences with service providers and families' FNMI Community to discuss plans of care and service needs.
• Continually evaluate children's needs while in care and revise the plan of care as required.
• Coordinate internal/external service requirements for children and families, and advocate on behalf of the child to ensure culturally appropriate and timely services.
• Determine the need for admission of children to care and liaise with Placement Workers regarding placement decisions.
• Coordinate and develop Customary Care Agreements with families, extended families, community members, and Band representatives.
• Facilitate ongoing contact between the child and family/extended family/FNMI community, and provide counseling and support during access visits.
• Intervene on a child's behalf in crisis situations, facilitate resolution, and develop plans to reduce recurrence.
• Coordinate requirements for court hearings, including preparing evidentiary materials and appearing as a witness if required.
• Complete case recordings, reports, correspondence, and legal forms.
• Participate in public communication and education activities.
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• BSW from an accredited university with a minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience within a Child and Family Wellbeing context.
• Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience in Indigenous family and children issues in a child and family wellbeing context may be considered.
• A valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
• Ability to provide an acceptable Child Welfare Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
• Demonstrated understanding of workplace Health and Safety practices and an employee's responsibility under current legislation.
• Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity and build strong internal relationships.

Skills

• Extensive knowledge of the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.
• Knowledge of Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Abuse Protocols, Risk Assessment Model and OnLAC.
• Knowledge of child development and demonstrated skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Knowledge of the Toronto Indigenous community and history of child welfare in the community.
• Excellent written communication.
• Strong verbal communication.
• Organizational skills.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize.
• Initiative.
• Respect for confidentiality.
• Completed Authorization Training would be an asset.
• Demonstrated understanding, and commitment to, integrating the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values into practice, service and relationships.
