About the Role
We are looking for a Database Reliability Engineer to join our team. This role is a DevOps engineer with deep SQL and database knowledge, focusing on managing infrastructure via Terraform and treating database provisioning, patching, and performance as an engineering problem. You will own the database infrastructure layer across our AWS environments, ensuring reliability through Infrastructure-as-Code.
Responsibilities
- Provision and manage AWS RDS instances entirely through Terraform
- Own database reliability by designing runbooks, defining SLOs, and setting up alerting
- Automate database operations, including schema migrations, backup validation, failover drills, and patching via CI/CD pipelines
- Improve performance by working with development teams on query tuning and indexing strategies
- Secure the data layer through encryption, IAM database authentication, and credential rotation
- Contribute to the platform by building reusable Terraform modules for database provisioning
- Participate in on-call rotation, responding to database incidents, and implementing permanent fixes
Requirements
- Strong SQL skills, including complex queries, performance tuning, indexing, and EXPLAIN plans
- Proficiency in AWS services such as RDS Aurora, Secrets Manager, IAM, CloudWatch, VPC networking, and KMS encryption
- Experience with Terraform for writing and maintaining modules, state management, and remote backends
- Proficiency in scripting with Python or Bash for automation and operational tooling
- Experience with CI/CD tools like GitLab CI for infrastructure changes and database migrations
- Experience with observability tools such as Datadog, CloudWatch, or Prometheus/Grafana
- Comfortable with system-level troubleshooting in production Linux environments
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL, including vacuuming, autovacuum tuning, and replication
- Experience with PgBouncer or RDS Proxy for connection pooling configuration and tuning
- Understanding of Kubernetes and how workloads connect to databases
- Experience with zero-downtime schema migrations using tools like Flyway or Liquibase
- Familiarity with financial services or regulated environments, including audit logging and data residency requirements
