About the Role

The Academic Skills Coach – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is responsible for coordinating and delivering the University's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provision. This role provides high-quality academic skills coaching to enable students to achieve their academic potential and succeed in higher education. The postholder will lead the planning, coordination, delivery, and continuous enhancement of EAP provision, ensuring academic language support is responsive to student needs and aligned with programme and institutional objectives. They will design and deliver EAP classes, workshops, and embedded academic language support to develop students' academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, alongside critical thinking, research, academic integrity, and independent learning. This role is central to the School’s approach to promoting the highest standards of Academic Integrity and supporting a diverse cohort of international students.

Responsibilities

Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes and academic language support sessions.
Design and deliver teaching that develops students' academic English proficiency across reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Support students in developing discipline-specific academic communication skills.
Assess students' English language and academic communication skills, providing constructive feedback and targeted interventions.
Provide one-to-one academic skills coaching to students, supporting the development of academic confidence, resilience and effective learning strategies.
Support students in understanding academic expectations within UK higher education.
Support students in developing effective study habits, time management, organisation, goal setting and self-regulation skills.
Identify barriers to academic success and develop personalised action plans for students at risk of academic underperformance, withdrawal or disengagement.
Deliver workshops and embedded academic language support in collaboration with academic programmes.
Develop and adapt EAP teaching materials, lesson plans, learning activities and assessment resources.
Create engaging and accessible learning resources, guidance materials and digital content.
Work collaboratively with the academic team on the integration of Academic Skills in the wider curriculum.
Use student data and feedback to identify trends, evaluate interventions and inform continuous improvement activities.
Proactively engage with students identified through institutional processes as requiring additional academic support.
Support the development and delivery of needs analysis tools.
Work collaboratively with academic, careers and student experience staff to identify language-related barriers to learning and develop strategies that support student success and retention.
Contribute to the evaluation and continuous enhancement of EAP provision.
Monitor student attendance, participation and academic progress within EAP provision.
Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of practice.
Undertake other duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.
