About the Role

The Family Advocate will provide services to domestic violence victims and clients in common, coordinating advocacy and accompaniment services throughout the criminal justice and civil legal process, working on-site at the Special Victims Unit of the San Francisco Police Department.

Responsibilities

• Provide timely and culturally appropriate response to domestic violence victims and their children identified through police reports, walk-ins, or law enforcement referrals.
• Maintain client information and files in compliance with grant and agency policies.
• Offer core services including expedited referral to counseling, support groups, shelter facilities, housing advocacy, emergency food and transportation, legal assistance, and childcare services.
• Execute, maintain, and submit program documentation, evaluations, and surveys.
• Conduct safety planning, refer clients to the crisis line, and provide education on healthy relationships and the cycle of violence.
• Conduct assessments of domestic violence danger levels and provide them to clients.
• Respond to Suspicious Injury Reports and SF Supplement to Health Practitioner Suspicious Injury Reports.
• Maintain knowledge of local, state, and federal domestic violence legislation and regulations.
• Coordinate linkages and collaborate with community-based organizations.
• Participate in mandatory staff meetings and training.
• Assist with other assigned duties.

Requirements

• Minimum two years of college in human services or equivalent school/work/life experience.
• At least one year of experience in domestic violence-related work.
• Experience working with human trafficked survivors and knowledge of human trafficking resources preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of community resources in the San Francisco area.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed counseling techniques, peer counseling models, crisis intervention, social milieu, and group facilitation.
• Understanding of DV/SA confidentiality and privilege laws.
• Ability to work independently and navigate public transportation.
• Ability to use all standard office equipment.
• Effective communication skills (in person, telephone, Zoom).
• Ability to sit or stand comfortably and navigate office spaces.
• Bilingual - English/Spanish required.
• Direct experience working with culturally diverse populations.
• Verifiable completion of state-mandated 40-hour domestic violence counselor training, or willingness to complete the next scheduled training.
• Background check and clearance through DOJ Live scan fingerprinting required.
• Completion of SVU orientation requirements.
• Valid California Driver’s License, clean driving record, and insurable under agency policy, or a valid California Identification card.
