About the Role

Okta is seeking a Director, Corporate Counsel – Privacy to lead a global privacy legal team and mature a scalable global privacy practice. This role provides supervision and guidance on privacy and data protection issues within a high-growth, publicly-traded enterprise software company, working on cutting-edge projects in a cloud-first, SaaS environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of privacy legal professionals, serving as a point of escalation and providing expertise to executives and stakeholders.
  • Advise Okta Security, Engineering, Product, and other stakeholders on compliance with privacy and data protection laws and regulations.
  • Negotiate privacy and data protection terms for Master Subscription Agreements, Data Processing Addendums, and other transaction documents.
  • Provide day-to-day legal support on privacy and data protection matters with pragmatic, business-oriented guidance.
  • Support the investigation of potential privacy incidents, analyzing regulatory and contractual obligations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain privacy and data protection policies, procedures, standards, and processes.
  • Build relationships to provide strategic advice and ensure privacy and data protection compliance.
  • Maintain an understanding of technical controls and assist in creating audit and monitoring frameworks.
  • Review privacy-related marketing and external communications content.
  • Strategically manage outside counsel relationships, including staffing, strategy, work product, and budgets.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant in-house and/or law firm experience as a practicing attorney.
  • At least 5 years of experience specializing in privacy and data protection, preferably at a SaaS technology company.
  • Ability to translate complex privacy issues into clear legal guidance and communicate effectively with non-legal colleagues.
  • Familiarity with the culture of a fast-paced enterprise software company and knowledge of SaaS products.
  • Experience working with highly-regulated customers, preferably in the financial services industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, drafting, and negotiation skills.
  • Sound and practical legal and business judgment, with the ability to think strategically.
  • Strong knowledge of privacy and data protection frameworks, including GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, HIPAA, NIST, ISO, FedRAMP, and PCI-DSS.
  • Proven track record managing and overseeing a team of privacy legal professionals, preferably at a global company.
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with diverse internal stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative, and comfortable rolling up sleeves.
  • Team-oriented with a sense of humor and high emotional intelligence.
  • Results-driven with the ability to organize, prioritize, and manage deadlines.
  • Strong academic background and J.D. from a highly-regarded school.
  • Active bar admission.
