About the Role
The Clinical Veterinarian (CV) is responsible for all aspects of veterinary care for beagles, cats, ferrets, and minipigs, including husbandry impacting animal health, and all elements of healthcare such as observations, treatments, procedures, and surgeries. The CV has the authority to make final decisions regarding animal health and welfare and interacts closely with various directors and management.
Responsibilities
- Provide professional guidance and input related to animal health, welfare, and veterinary issues at foreign beagle kennels.
- Participate in regular conference calls with DP and international staff.
- Develop vaccination and treatment procedures.
- Interact with international veterinary staff.
- Visit international kennels several times a year.
- Address selected veterinary or animal health concerns from domestic and foreign customers.
- Further efforts to harmonize animal care and welfare across sites.
- Share veterinary responsibilities in domestic beagle, cat, minipig, and ferret colonies.
- Provide guidance for detection dog health monitoring, vaccination, physical exams, and sick calls.
- Conduct daily verbal consultations with the DV regarding ongoing animal health concerns.
- Participate in at least weekly direct clinical consults with the AHC or designees in specified areas.
- Act as backup for direct clinical consults with barrier production supervisors to discuss clinical, husbandry, or production problems and provide training.
- Participate in at least twice monthly direct clinical consults with the AHC and production personnel.
- Ensure all animals are in good health prior to shipment.
- Inspect individual animals prior to shipment and routinely inspect groups of ferrets.
- Oversee the pre-shipment examination of animals by technical staff to ensure requirements are met and provide training.
- Participate in elective and non-elective surgeries, including pre-shipment neutering and cesarean sections.
- Oversee procedural competency and conduct training of technical staff for animal health maintenance and customer-driven postmortem organ/tissue collection.
- Interact with pet and research ferret areas, addressing customer questions or concerns.
- Interact with animal regulatory authorities including USDA, participate in inspections, and ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations.
- Interface with customers as needed, including on-site and off-site visits, and respond to inquiries.
- May attend trade shows, participate in customer visits to MF, and occasionally visit customer facilities.
