About the Role
Join us at the kickoff of pre-production for an ambitious AA PC/Console project. Your mission will be to design and lay the foundations of the game's progression structure, ensuring a readable, engaging, and replayable experience as the team and content scale up.
Responsibilities
- Design and prototype the game's overall progression structure, including the order of mechanic introduction, level arcs, and general pacing.
- Build coherent difficulty curves and continuously adjust them based on playtest feedback.
- Produce blockouts and rapidly iterate on key levels during pre-production to set the game's standards.
- Collaborate with game design to ensure mechanics are introduced at the right time and align expectations with creative direction.
- Set up playtest tools and processes to evaluate pacing and challenge, and document design sheets.
- Define level design guidelines for team onboarding and contribute to pipeline decisions within Unreal Engine.
Requirements
- Ability to defend the design logic behind a difficulty curve or progression system.
- Proficiency in fast blockout and iteration, treating first versions as disposable.
- Autonomy in Unreal Engine for prototyping without external dependencies.
- Ability to extract key insights from playtest feedback.
- Skill in writing documentation that enables others to build independently.
- Application of Rational Game Design principles.
- Collaboration with game designers, gameplay programmers, technical artists, QA, production, and technical/creative direction.
