About the Role

Mia Labs is seeking a Software Engineer (AI/ML) to enhance our voice AI platform, focusing on the real-time pipeline of speech-to-text, LLM reasoning, and text-to-speech. This role involves optimizing latency, model quality, cost, and reliability across the AI stack, with direct mentorship from the AI lead.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve the real-time voice AI pipeline: speech-to-text, conversational LLM orchestration, and text-to-speech, with hard latency targets (P90 end-to-end latency under 2 seconds).
• Improve model performance in production and run evaluations for core functionality.
• Enhance instrumentation (OTel/Braintrust) and build dashboards and alerting.
• Optimize cost by increasing throughput from open-source LLMs.
• Collaborate with vendors (Anthropic, Microsoft/Azure OpenAI, Deepgram, NVIDIA) to test new models, evaluate alternatives, and manage failover.
• Ship AI R&D features into production, including backchanneling, emotional expressiveness, background audio, voice cloning, and multilingual features.
• Implement AI guardrails to ensure correct model behavior on live customer calls.

Requirements

• 1+ years of experience in software development (including relevant internships).
• Strong engineering fundamentals: production code writing, instrumentation, and ownership of shipped work.
• Comfort with observability tooling (OpenTelemetry or similar) and data-driven decision-making.
• Scrappy, startup-ready mindset with a willingness for broad ownership and fast iteration.
• Clear communication skills to explain AI behavior and tradeoffs to various teams.
