About the Role
The Senior Development Officer for Foundations plays a leading role in creating, overseeing, and executing the strategy to raise funds from US-based professional foundations. This key position supports the team in meeting ambitious fundraising targets and manages a personal portfolio of professional foundations, identifying, developing, managing, and growing strategic relationships with high-value foundation donors. The role also directly supervises the Sr. Associate, Foundations and the Development Officer for Foundations.
Responsibilities
- Pursue strategic opportunities to identify and develop new audience segments or donors for MSF-USA's mission.
- Build trust and loyalty with potential and existing donors, designing and delivering the donor engagement strategy.
- Secure reliable, sustainable, and efficient resources in alignment with MSF-US commitments.
- Drive awareness and consideration through brand positioning based on the brand strategy and implement brand plans.
- Deploy and champion the latest technological systems and capabilities for the Development team.
- Communicate actions needed to implement the function's strategy and motivate the team to achieve local business goals.
- Identify shortcomings in business practices and suggest/implement improvements.
- Develop and implement a relationship management plan for strategic, complex potential accounts.
- Develop and implement a relationship management plan for strategic, complex existing accounts.
- Manage and develop important donor relationships, likely including mid-tier and multinational foundations.
- Oversee the implementation and maintenance of the donor relationship management system.
- Drive and secure donor renewals through exceptional service interactions.
- Act as a recognized expert to assess situations and make appropriate adjustments to thinking and work habits.
- Apply expertise to identify key donation influences, establish trust, and orient MSF-USA around donor needs.
- Plan and align work to meet commitments aligned with MSF-USA goals.
- Interpret and apply understanding of key financial indicators.
- Anticipate and adopt innovations in digital and technology applications.
- Determine and analyze trends from collected data to assist in decision-making.
- Plan and manage small project work assignments within desired cost, time, and quality parameters.
- Adapt approach and demeanor to match shifting demands of different situations.
- Apply knowledge of MSF-USA and the industry to advance organizational goals.
- Manage the Sr. Development Associate for Foundations and the Stewardship Associate.
Requirements
- Minimum 7 years of successful fundraising experience, preferably with US Foundations, Corporations, Major Donors, or with multilateral/bilateral funders.
- Minimum 2 years of staff management experience.
- Proven track record in all aspects of donor cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including representation and public speaking.
- Deep knowledge of the foundation world and its functioning.
- Proven skills in working productively with donors, foundation staff, and/or board members.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize complex and sensitive material to develop proposals and reports.
- Ability to present appropriate, well-informed messages to donors.
- Ability to write a range of correspondence from formal business letters to warm thank you notes.
- Excellent judgment and diplomacy.
- Experience with donor databases and contacts management.
- Facility with spreadsheets, budgets, and forecasting.
- Very strong interpersonal and management skills.
- Ability to handle a large volume of work under pressure and with deadlines.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Keen attention to detail with ability to track multiple projects at one time.
- Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Familiarity with and commitment to the work of MSF.
- Must be willing to travel for work as needed.
