About the Role

The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Texas is seeking a Legal Assistant for their Austin office to provide comprehensive legal secretarial and clerical support to Assistant Federal Defenders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage attorney calendars, including court settings and filing deadlines.
  • Answer and route calls, handling general inquiries professionally.
  • Maintain organized and accurate case files and records.
  • Draft and review legal documents, briefs, and correspondence in Word, verifying accuracy.
  • Perform conflict checks as required.
  • Provide office support, including heavy word processing, filing, photocopying, and mail routing.
  • Deliver documents to the courthouse as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of general experience.
  • 1 year of specialized experience (relevant coursework may substitute).
  • Spanish fluency.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, apply policies, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Proactive work ethic, with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced law office environment.
  • Prior law office experience is preferred.
  • Employment is contingent on a satisfactory background check (FBI name & fingerprints).
