About the Role
The SCORE team is seeking a Staff-level engineer to own the backend health, performance, and reliability of core platform components, including high-scale APIs and reporting systems. This role serves as a deliberate growth track into people management, where you will initially focus on technical leadership and mentoring before transitioning to managing a growing engineering team in London.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend systems supporting a high-traffic web and data platform.
- Act as a technical reviewer and mentor in design and code reviews.
- Drive technical direction on ambiguous, cross-cutting problems balancing reliability, performance, and delivery speed.
- Partner with adjacent teams and platform governance groups to align on shared standards.
- Manage a senior engineer with a path to leading a larger engineering team.
- Conduct regular 1:1s, own performance and growth conversations, and participate in hiring.
- Represent team technical direction and staffing needs in cross-functional planning.
Requirements
- Operate at a Staff engineer level as a recognized technical authority.
- Hands-on experience building and operating backend systems for a web or data platform of meaningful scale.
- Actively seeking a path into people management with prior experience mentoring, leading, or informally guiding engineers.
- Ability to operate independently in ambiguity, scoping, and driving execution on complex backend problems.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Commitment to taking ownership of production systems.
