About the Role

Guardian Australia is seeking a data journalist with coding and writing skills to join our data and interactives team to create award-winning data and visual journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Find and tell stories within simple or complex data using a variety of research and analysis skills.
  • Write clearly and quickly for breaking news, explainers, datablogs and investigative reports.
  • Create data visualisations ranging from quick, responsive charts to more detailed and complex interactive features.
  • Automate data gathering and analysis with Python, R or another language.
  • Collaborate with developers, editors and other Guardian Australia journalists on news and special features.

Requirements

  • Ability to find and research data sources.
  • Proven data analysis skills.
  • Use of R, Python or another programming language, particularly for data analysis, scraping, visualisation, and automation.
  • Previous experience in designing and building data visualisations and interactive graphics.
  • Experience with d3 and svelte is a plus, but not essential.
  • Experience in writing news or analysis based on own data analysis.
  • Previous experience working as a data journalist is desirable, but not essential for a candidate with strong analysis and visualisation skills from outside the media.
  • An interest in new and experimental methods of storytelling.
  • Demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role.
  • A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values.
