About the Role

Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, production-grade distributed systems powering AI features for millions of daily users. Own architecture decisions, direct strategy for distributed systems, and manage technical debt. Enhance the technical capability of the AI Products team by championing engineering excellence, mentoring engineers, and collaborating across Xero to improve data usability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, production-grade distributed systems.
  • Own architecture decisions for flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and robustness.
  • Direct strategy for distributed systems.
  • Manage technical debt across the AI Products estate.
  • Lift the technical capability of the AI Products team.
  • Champion engineering excellence.
  • Mentor junior engineers.
  • Collaborate across Xero to enhance data usability.
  • Apply modern AI research, including Large Language Models, into production-grade systems.
  • Build interfaces and harnesses to transition models from research into production.
  • Reduce toil and deliver data-driven insights for small businesses.
  • Design and build highly scalable, distributed production infrastructure for generative AI features.
  • Harness tools like Python, SQL, and distributed processing engines (Spark, Dask) for web-scale data workloads.
  • Deploy to production environments running on AWS and Kubernetes.
  • Integrate modern Large Language Model technologies into product features.

Requirements

  • 5+ years building and operating production Python (or equivalent language) services at scale.
  • Strong system design and coding proficiency.
  • Track record of owning services or pipelines in production.
  • Experience with operational/on-call responsibility, incident response, and managing technical debt.
  • Deep understanding of distributed processing principles (Spark, Dask, or similar).
  • Strong SQL capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating ML models or LLM-based features into production systems.
  • Comfortable working alongside Applied Scientists to productionize their work.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both business and technical audiences.
  • Natural coaching mindset, with experience establishing engineering standards and mentoring other engineers.
  • Familiarity with ML tooling such as MLFlow, TensorFlow, or PyTorch is valued.
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools like Airflow or Prefect is valued.
  • Prior experience applying or fine-tuning LLMs in a product context is nice to have.
