About the Role

ICON is seeking a Construction Materials Technician to join our Materials Science team. This role is crucial for developing and testing cement-based materials used in ICON’s advanced 3D printing technology, supporting both laboratory and field testing to ensure material quality and performance.

Responsibilities

• Perform standardized laboratory tests on aggregates, cement, concrete, and related materials.
• Assist with the development and execution of testing procedures for 3D printed cement-based materials.
• Support internal quality control activities by fabricating and transporting test samples, recording test data, and maintaining test documentation.
• Prepare materials and equipment for experiments and carry out testing plans.
• Maintain and clean laboratory tools and testing equipment, assist with calibrations and troubleshooting.
• Monitor laboratory supplies and track inventory.
• Participate in safety procedures and protocols for laboratory and field environments.
• Assist with waste management practices at job and test sites.
• Support other departments with materials testing needs.
• Perform physical tasks, including lifting materials up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in varying conditions.
• Transition from lab to field work, conduct tests individually, fill up bench sheets, and work with concrete lab machinery.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in concrete, cement, or construction materials testing.
• Basic understanding of lab procedures and materials handling.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Willingness to work collaboratively on a team and take initiative.
• Comfortable lifting up to 50 pounds and working in outdoor or construction settings.
• Proficient or fluent in English.
• Ability to obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification within 3 months of hire.

Skills

• ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician certification.
• Familiarity with ASTM test methods for concrete and mortar.
• Experience working in a laboratory or on active construction sites.
• Basic computer skills (Google Workspace or MS Office).
• Strong attention to detail and curiosity to learn new processes.
• Experience or interest in working at a startup or with emerging construction technologies.
