About the Role
ICON is seeking a Construction Materials Technician to join our Materials Science team. This role is crucial for developing and testing cement-based materials used in ICON’s advanced 3D printing technology, supporting both laboratory and field testing to ensure material quality and performance.
Responsibilities
- Perform standardized laboratory tests on aggregates, cement, concrete, and related materials.
- Assist with the development and execution of testing procedures for 3D printed cement-based materials.
- Support internal quality control activities by fabricating and transporting test samples, recording test data, and maintaining test documentation.
- Prepare materials and equipment for experiments and carry out testing plans.
- Maintain and clean laboratory tools and testing equipment, assist with calibrations and troubleshooting.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and track inventory.
- Participate in safety procedures and protocols for laboratory and field environments.
- Assist with waste management practices at job and test sites.
- Support other departments with materials testing needs.
- Perform physical tasks, including lifting materials up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in varying conditions.
- Transition from lab to field work, conduct tests individually, fill up bench sheets, and work with concrete lab machinery.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in concrete, cement, or construction materials testing.
- Basic understanding of lab procedures and materials handling.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to work collaboratively on a team and take initiative.
- Comfortable lifting up to 50 pounds and working in outdoor or construction settings.
- Proficient or fluent in English.
- Ability to obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification within 3 months of hire.
Skills
- ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician certification.
- Familiarity with ASTM test methods for concrete and mortar.
- Experience working in a laboratory or on active construction sites.
- Basic computer skills (Google Workspace or MS Office).
- Strong attention to detail and curiosity to learn new processes.
- Experience or interest in working at a startup or with emerging construction technologies.
